No one has seen God for sure but our destiny is written by parliament. And, parliamentarians are also trying to look like common people. In India, common people constitute two sets of people: Farmers and Factory workers. Factories are generally located in urban areas where dress code of common people become different from the farmers. Indian farmers generally wear Dhoti, Lungi and Gamchha. 65% of Indian population is engaged in agricultural activities which appears to be a huge chunk of population that can determine the fate of political parties in the upcoming Lok Sabha election, 2024.
So, in order to impress the common people, politicians are very dexterous and crafty. A tinge of symbolism is quite enough to win the heart of common people. As soon as the notification of the Lok Sabha election became public in March, all political parties started placing orders of Gamchha (Cotton towel) and Topis (caps). 300,000 Gamchhas and 400,000 Topis with party symbol and Party name are said to have ordered by the BJP among the weavers of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chattisgarh. Moreover, it will serve two purposes. The first is that it will symbolically colour the high-profile politician of demi-god-stature to appear in common hues. And, after election, Skill India Program will become an instant hit by citing the temporary engagement of weavers. Therefore, it will be a win-win situation for political parties.
Following the footsteps of the ruling party, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress have placed the same order in Delhi by imprinting “Loktantra Bachao”. It was remained quite visible in INDIA alliance rally between March 28 to 31, 2024. Cloth merchants in Gandhinagar, Delhi is expecting triple rise in demand in comparison with 2019 General elections.
The rising demand of Gamachha has made us understood that the common look is expensive and at the same time, it paves way to become special and powerful. However, it could also be interpreted that the greatness of a character is achieved through the way of humble gesture, if not displaying practically, then, at least wearing.
