How can Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal run his government from jail? If he is able to do it that makes our democracy vibrant, undoubtedly. But at the same time, it raises serious question because common people can not enjoy such facilities like Delhi CM does. Therefore, it could be interpreted that the level of freedom in democracy differs. It is not the same for everyone.
The second question is that when Delhi CM performs his duties from custody, then his arrest is questionable, of course. In addition, he is the third AAP leader after Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia and AAP MP Sanjay Singh.
The excise scam has been investigating by Enforcement Directorate (ED) for two years but still they have not cemented any concrete information on which the arrested leaders could be found guilty before court. Therefore, a seed of suspicion starts growing in this context. However, the federal agency claims that the bribe of 100 crore was received by AAP of which half of the bribe spent in Goa assembly elections in 2022. Since Mr. Kejriwal is the national convener of AAP, along with the Chief Minister of Delhi, he got arrested by the ED on 21st March 2024 when his anticipatory bail was rejected by Delhi High Court. Moreover, he also skipped 9 summonses of the ED and became the first sitting chief minister to be arrested by ED.
On this dramatic juncture of Indian politics, it was perceived that he would step down as a chief minister by upholding moral responsibility, but he refused to do it. And, this could be understood in two different ways. The first one is that either Delhi CM is confident enough that he is not involved in Delhi liquor policy money laundering case or the ED lacks the concrete evidence to produce it before the court. The second reason is that if the ED has all the evidences of his and his party members involvement, then why the case has been lingering for 2 years? Remaining unfazed after arrest, he continues to perform his duties from jail is setting up a new precedence in the landscape of Indian politics.
Now, what he does in current political upheavals will take you back in 2012 when he formed AAP ( Aam Admi Party). The AAP was formed to change the dynamics of Indian politics. He has been in power since 2013 in Delhi owing to his resolution to uplift the poor and downtrodden people of the society. His subsidy-oriented policy has become the common norm of election agenda. He was severely criticized for it, later on every party followed his policy to woo the voters.
Losing his ground on the political turf by being arrested, he started consolidating his voters by administrating his welfare schemes to provide relief to the voters behind the bars. Every third voter in Delhi belongs to Purvanchal and by this way his new political stance is going to work as catalyst in the General Election 2024.
